Turtle Race

about

Moving to Nashville, TN, from a small town is a common backstory for many songwriters and artists. What happens next is where the story diverges, and for Ben Park, that tale is a slow one. Constantly comparing himself and feeling like music was a competition took a toll on his mental health. In 2019, he finally took a healthier approach to his endeavors amidst the hustle and bustle of the (Music) city life. "Turtle Race" is a stripped, yet uplifting, tune about caring for one's mental health while pursuing personal passion. Who cares if other people have found greater success in a shorter period of time? Who cares if you haven't "made it big" (yet)? In music and life, taking your own pace is more important than treating your contemporaries like rivals in an imaginary race to the top.

lyrics

I saw a friend onstage
Playing a song we wrote on that day
A few years ago
We were both new in town back then
I was in school, they were paying rent
Ticking at our own metronomes

One hand's rocking faster than the other
I could feel like I'm still in the gutter
As they climb higher to the top
There's no envy on my part because
I chose to stop

And breathe for a while
Sometimes, life gets in the way
But I'm feeling okay
See my end goal from many miles away
But I'm content in my own turtle race

Met a few new neighbors in town
Hoping they would stick around
Despite Nashville traffic
Who'da thought they'd be on live T.V.
They haven't been here as long as me
But why the heck/hell/fuck does time matter

One hand's rocking faster than the other
I could feel like I'm still in the gutter
As they climb higher to the top
There's no envy on my part because
I chose to stop

And breathe for a while
Sometimes, life gets in the way
But I'm feeling okay
See my end goal from many miles away
But I'm content in my own turtle race

Let's breathe for a while
Sometimes, life gets in the way
But I'm feeling okay
See my end goal from many miles away
But I'm content in my own turtle race
