At its core, "Horse + Carriage" is about taking a break from relationships. The "narrator" singing the tune recognizes his shortcomings, his flaws, that keep him from jumping back into the dating pool. Not only is the narrator fearful of being hurt over and over again with every relationship. He is also hesitant due to the technicalities that come with maintaining intimate relationships with a significant other. The skeletal instrumentation emphasizes the song's main point and the vulnerability of the "narrator's" sentiment.
